Like most entrepreneurs, I didn’t have money for anything extra when I started out. It was all I could do to pay bills, make payroll, keep my building lit and powered and so on. When the little league came around I had to cry poor when asked to sponsor a team, even though my own kids played. I’d stay late sometimes to clean the office, and my wife worked on the books part time for free. No WB Mason for me, I had to look for deals and do my own purchasing, even for office coffee!
There was a lot to learn, but some things you shouldn’t even have to think about. The way you treat your employees says a lot about you, and no matter what business you’re in, I believe it has everything to do with your ultimate success or failure. Little things matter. Like remembering birthdays and giving out birthday cards. Even when your company gets bigger, as mine has, it doesn’t have to be a chore. I use internet sites like the Gallery Collection. There’s an endless variety and they always look great. I’ve given Birthday Cards from day 1 and it never ceases to amaze me how much the workers appreciate it. And the free coffee, that always goes over big! I do it because I care about them, but I’m convinced it results in better productivity too.
Now that we’re over the hump and I can do more, I still remember how important the little things are.
He’s right. Even if you love your job, can’t imagine a better one, the recognition of your birthday is another perk the boss can give you. A card with best wishes makes the day at work a little more special.
My company gives all of their employees a birthday card on their special day and on top of that we also get an anniversary card commemorating our start date with the company. I always appreciated this small but significant gesture.
It ‘s great that you always remembered that your employees need recognition on their birthdays. Without them, where would your company be?
Marco is right – these little things are important and go a long way. My employer always recognizes birthdays and other milestones. A simple card can say a lot and makes people feel appreciated. It is nice to be thought of!
Everyone likes to be remembered on their birthday. It’s a given with family and friends, but extra nice to be remembered at work. And it’s true, when someone shows they care enough to give a card, you tend to care back.
I’m surprised more bosses don’t give out birthday cards. If you work for a small store or a restaurant it makes more sense to recognize your workers. If one or two leave, that can really impact a small business. Treat them right, Mr. Boss Man and they’ll be loyal.
I couldn’t agree more. It’s important to be focused on accomplishing your goals, but I find it equally important to appreciate those that help you along the way. No company could succeed without the hard work and dedication of its employees. That is not something to take for granted. This post proves that even if you are on the tightest of budgets, you can acknowledge the most important milestones in your employees lives, which in turn shows them that you care.
I saw The Gallery Collection website while looking for Birthday cards, the cards looked beautiful on the site but, wanted to see a few in person. I requested a few samples and when they arrived I was not disappointed, the quality and detailed embossing on most of the Birthday cards made my job even more difficult selecting 1 card so I ended up ordering 2 different designs.
I think Marco’s story is typical. We have a small business and money is tight. I haven’t been in business long enough to even think about what to do for the people who are helping me. But my wife told me to make sure we remembered their birthdays with a card at least. I see she was right. I can afford to throw in a $5 gift card for the local coffee shop this year.
